We absolutely loved this book. Light Between Oceans is a beautiful yet heart-wrenching story about right versus wrong, and the fact that sometimes it’s hard to know the difference. Set in Western Australia in the years following WWI, the story begins when a lighthouse keeper, Tom, and his wife, Isabel, find a boat washed up on their island – the boat contains both a living baby, and a dead man. They’ve been desperate for a child of their own, and this ‘gift’ seems too good to be true. The decision to claim this child as their own, and not report the discovery to authorities, is the moment that sets the tragic course of this novel.
There are so many likeable characters in this book, and at times it can be surprising to realise where your sympathies lie. This is a complex, disturbing and haunting moral dilemma, which will stay with you for a long time after you’ve read the final page. Have a box of tissues handy for this one.
